If you are like most companies, most of your organic search comes from branded terms, aka people who have already heard of your company. You can get a lot more insight if you filter out the branded terms and see how true prospects are finding you.
The how to:
First get to your organic keyword search report.
- Go to: Traffic Sources -> Keywords (1 + 2)
- Click on “non-paid” under the visitor graph (3)

Next apply an advanced filter
- Click on “Advanced Filter” (4)
- Exclude your branded key terms. You may need to click on “+ Add new condition” to include multiple spelling variations of your brand. Just pick keyword as your dimension. (5)
- Click “Apply filter” (6)
Now what?
Now you can see how your non-branded terms are performing and you can take steps to beef up the content surrounding those terms. In this example we can see that Company X is performing quite well in mirrors and wall décor, but less so in lamps. Now that we are armed with this information we can go through our lamp category pages and make improvements like including text on the pages that mentions the key term “lamps”. Try it out with your site and see what you discover…
